no.16 is an immersive composition for various binaural waveform tones by sound artist Paolo Calabrese, composed in August 2023.

no.16 delves into non-linear composition, placing emphasis on soundmarks and harmonic modulations. The track unveils the enchanting qualities of sustained harmonic sounds, where listening layers dissolve and reemerge within a structured space. Calabrese's expertise in phonography, harmonic theory, and long-form composition serves as a foundation for this work. His nuanced minimalism creates a surprisingly focused depth, opening an intermediate silence space that leads the audience to a private realm, offering an actively shared and ever-changing experience.

Building on his previous records, no.16 follows in the footsteps of Calabrese's no.14 [Adventurous Music, 2023], 610 [Adventurous Music, 2023], and 678 [Here Free Press, 2022], that collectively navigate a guideline-free emotional space, transitioning from charming improvisations to unwritten photographs of emotionality.

With no.16, Paolo Calabrese pushes beyond the confines of his formal education, tracing more ambiguous, intimate, and sometimes deviant forms. Operating according to a confused logic, he returns to themes with an ingenious dramaturgy of underlying energies, trusting that the process will unveil emotionally vulnerable facets through a fluid mix of composition and pure expression. As he describes it, "dismantling the form from the inside out, in a way that bends to the feeling, rather than the structure."
Originally conceived as a commissioned sound diffusion piece for the transmedia exhibition 'AXIA' curated by RetroGuard, no.16 transcends its origins to offer a unique concert experience.

Paolo Calabrese is an Italian sound artist whose work mostly encompasses recorded compositions, performances, and installations.
His main focus is on sound capacities: unconventional tunings, exploration of psychoacoustic properties, and perceptions phenomena.
